Set in the decadent medieval kingdom of Dreamland, Disenchantment is an animated fantasy series created by Matt Groening, the author of The Simpsons and Futurama, designed for a broad adult target audience that also includes teenagers and ‘kidults’. The series follows the adventures of Bean, an alcoholic and slacker teenage princess, who rebels against her father and begins a life of raids, brawls and adventures of all kinds, accompanied by a goofy and ingenuous elf and a sarcastic personal demon who looks like a cat. In the course of the journey, the wacky trio meets orcs, sprites, harpies, goblins, trolls, walruses and also many silly humans. In this irreverent, witty and full of surprises parody of fantasy, each episode unfolds under the banner of Groening’s typical irony, humour and irreverent satire, and mocks stereotypes and prejudices, with a gender-fluid approach that also takes into account unconventional sexual orientations.

Bean, the main protagonist of Disenchantment, personifies a character very far from the stereotypical fairy tale princess. She is a rebellious 19-year-old who wants no constraints, who refuses to conform to rules and is always in conflict with the conventions associated with the typical female role.
Unlike the classic heroines, Bean is imperfect, has many vices and makes mischief, but she has grit, courage and a good heart and knows how to get herself out of trouble. A young woman in search of her own identity, who does not need a man to feel fulfilled.

A NETFLIX success
The series is available exclusively on Netflix, translated into 27 languages. First released on the streaming platform in August 2018, with Part 1 comprising 10 episodes, following growing appreciation, it has been enriched with new episodes in the following years and currently has 4 parts, the last of which was released in February 2022, each with 10 episodes with an average length of 30 minutes.
